Tokyo based design studio YOY created ‘Canvas’, a series of two-dimensional hanging furniture pieces. They are constructed out of wood and and aluminum while the volume is covered by an elastic fabric, screen-printed with drawings of different types of furniture. The piece works when the frame is leaned against a wall, stretching when weight is applied it can be used as actual seating.

Brian Vu is a photographer and collagist currently living and working in Brooklyn, NY. He grew up in Orange County, CA and began shooting photos in high school as a way to capture his friends. Collage came a couple years ago by accident. Surprisingly after all these years, it’s still crazy that he´s here pursuing it.

Already last year we visited Gallery Weekend, mingling with hundreds of art enthusiasts to let ourselves inspire by numerous creative, bizarre and fascinating artworks. There was a lot to discover, plenty of people filled the gallery spaces and we are looking very much forward to this years Gallery Weekend, when 64 artists show their works in over 50 galleries.

The Avant/Garde Diaries met Ole Sondresen, a New York-based architect whose personal and non-intrusive work utilizes the humble aesthetics of reclaimed and recycled materials. His office is in the mythical 80 Wooster Street basement studio of George Maciunas – a location long abandoned after its original incarnation as a hive for Fluxus gatherings with artists like Yoko Ono, Andy Warhol, and Jonas Mekas.

Located on a remote pristine mountain on a sheep station in central western NSW, this structure by Casey Brown Architecture is sited at the edge of a ridge surrounded by large granite boulders and ancient dead trees. The tower has panoramic views for hundreds of miles to the horizon.

The dark and mysterious paintings of Barcelona-based artist Jonathan Dalton seem to be from another world. Dark tinted characters and scenes vanish in even darker surroundings, telling bizarre stories while none of the visuals provide hints for the viewer to resolve the mystery.
