#20 Behind the Blog – It’s a Celebration!

behindtheblog20

behindtheblog20

Ausgabe ein Special her muss.

#19 Behind the Blog: Design Milk

behindtheblog19

Viel Spass!

designmilk

Please describe your blog in one sentence:
Design Milk is an online magazine dedicated to modern design.

What is the meaning/thought of the name “Design Milk”?
Believe it or not, you are the first one to ask me this question. Let’s just say that since milk contains vitamin D, drinking milk every day gives you a daily dose of vitamin D, but in this case D stands for “Design.“ Design Milk is your daily dose of Design.

You also started Art Milk and recently Dog Milk – can you tell us a little bit about these projects?
Art Milk is a blog that actually began as the Art category on Design Milk, but it grew rapidly out of the Design Milk mold. We received so many art submissions that we finally decided that Art demanded its very own website. Now, all of the Art category content on Design Milk is more product design focused, which fits in better with the site’s overall theme. Art Milk can now focuses more on modern fine art and illustration on its own site.

Dog Milk is near and dear to my heart. There really aren’t too many modern dog blogs out there, and I wanted to create a site where I could blog solely about modern dog products. Since I have two dogs myself, I struggle with where to find great modern dog products, so it’s kind of like a place where I can bookmark all of my discoveries. And share them with other modern dog lovers, of course.

How many people write articles for Design-, Art- and Dog Milk?
Right now, we have four contributors to Design Milk and two contributors to Art Milk. And me!

Your favourite post on Design Milk and why?
Wow that is a very hard question to answer. I guess all of them, but if I had to choose just one, I think it would be Happy Pills. Not only is this a fantastic and controversial design concept, but it really gets people talking – they either love it or hate it. I really enjoy when people begin thinking and discussing design on my site, whether positive or negative.

What do you do for a living?
I blog!

How is your daily routine?
Crazy! Every day I wake up with a to-do list that feels like a million miles long. Since I do all of my sites’ maintenance, advertising management, designing, Tweeting, and emailing, I have a lot on my plate beyond just writing posts. My intern recently left so I’m on my own again and things are a little busier this time of year because of all of the furniture shows.

I feel very lucky every day when I start my day, though, because I am doing what I love.

Your future plans?
I’ve got my hands very full right now with my websites, so we will see what happens with the Internet. Things change so quickly, and I want to be able to change and grow with them.

Your top 5 blogs:
This changes every single week, but right now I am really into:
1. Notcot
2. Melissa Dixson’s blog
3. The Brick House
4. DESIGNwatcher
5. Holycool

#18 Behind the Blog: unurth

behindtheblog18

unurth

Please describe your blog in one sentence:
Great street art from around the world.

Why do you write about street art in your blog?
Because I enjoy the process of finding great street art, it’s exciting, relaxing, fulfilling in some way.

Your favourite post on unurth and why?
This is tough; mostly it’s whatever I’ve just posted. But I’ve enjoyed doing some interview posts recently because I get a peek at the character behind some of my favorite art; I’ve done interviews with Escif, Bumblebee, Becca, but the most recent one was with Fauxreel, who got into some really interesting topics around street art, so I’d go for that one.

What do you do for a living?
I work for GOOD, a media company based in Los Angeles.

How is your daily routine?
I try to run or play tennis first thing in the morning, then I’ll probably do a couple of posts with some coffee, then work most of the day. I’ll do most of my unurth stuff in the evening. The art for most unurth posts is either emailed to me by artists or photographers, or I find things in blogs (my google reader is pretty weighed down!), or on flickr. I try to take as many photos of street art in LA as I can, but it’s been quiet for the past year or so; thankfully the streets are getting more active again now.

Your future plans?
A few fun ideas are floating around, but I haven’t settled on anything yet. I’ll definitely continue unurth in something like its current form, I’m enjoying it.

Your top 5 blogs:
1. but does it float
2. GOOD
3. Vandalog
4. Arrested Motion
5. ekosystem
… but what I really like are the hundreds of great artist blogs… Sam3, Blu, Bast, Gaia, Conor Harrington, Famiglia Baglione etc. etc.

#17 Behind the Blog: Studio5555

behindtheblog17

studio5555

Wer steckt hinter Studio5555 bzw. was macht ihr genau?

Wer oder was inspiriert dich?
Inspirieren lasse ich mich von meinem Habitat. D.h.

Was kommt nach Facebook, MySpace und Twitter bzw. was würdest du dir wünschen?
Gute Frage.

1. MacBook Pro
2. iPhone
3. Senseo Kaffeemaschine
4. Zahnbürste
5. Brille – die auf der Nase

Top 5 Blogs:
1. Stylespion
2. Markus Waeger
3. Admartinator
4. Der Stilpirat
5. Kopfbunt

#16 Behind the Blog: Hard Feelings

hardfeelings

hardf

Please describe your blog in one sentence:
Art is hard.

Why are you blogging?
I started this site as a means to expose some of the seriously talented people out there that won’t get picked up by a big magazine or client because they’re too young or too weird or from an underexposed city/country. I’ve been obsessed with art + music + even advertising since I was a little, little kid but I was never great at drawing or playing music, so I didn’t study art in school or start pursuing it as a profession until a few years ago when I started working at a record label. I guess it never occurred to me to be professionally involved + not be the one making the art. That’s my cliche answer – I love art + I want to be a part of it, in every capacity possible.

How is your daily routine?
I wake up around 7:30 to send my fiance off to her job as an ad exec, eat some fruit + drink some coffee. Spend about 2 or 3 hours going through my reader, reading the local paper + responding to emails. The next 5 or 6 hours are a flurry of brainstorming, research, loud music + drafting posts. Sprinkle a little design work in there + that’s my 9-5. After five, I’m taking pictures, eating at one of the 260 restaurants in my little city, at the bar or buying records at my favorite record shop.

Your future plans?
Get married in the fall, grow the blog to a level that allows me to continue meeting great people + working with artists that are infinitely more talented than I am while actually supporting myself. In a few years, i’d like to open my own little shop. That could mean a lot of different shit. We’ll see what happens.

Your top 5 blogs:
1. Hilobrow
2. Them Thangs
3. The Selvedge Yard
4. Growing Up
5. The Silver Lining

feav

Please describe your blog in one sentence:
Photos by photographers I like, with some interviews and some of my photos thrown in.

Why are you blogging?
Mostly as a way of keeping track of photographers I like.

How is your daily routine?
Get up, make coffee and check email before heading off to work at the web designer factory.

#14 Behind the Blog: Beautiful/Decay

behindtheblog14

beautiful

Please describe your blog in one sentence:
Independent emerging art + design.

Why are you blogging?
Our blog is an extension of our print publication, Beautiful/Decay. We first started with the publication and when the internet started to get popular it occured to us that we could post works and artists on our website that we either couldn’t feature in the magazine or made work that wouldn’t look good in print. It’s also given a way for us to have a more intimate dialogue with our fans/followers. Now we have all sorts of interesting discussions on our comments. It’s nice to hear what our readers think about the work we post.

How is your daily routine?
We don’t really have a routine as the blog is only one small aspect of what we do. We get into the office around 10am and then everyone posts a couple of things on the blog. we do 6 blog posts a day during the week and one or two on the weekends.

Your future plans?
We want to get the blog up to 10 posts a day. We’ve been doing a lot of studio visit posts as of late so it might be cool to do more of those. Our readers seem to really enjoy those.

Your top 5 blogs:
1. www.facebook.com – i know it’s not a blog but more and more this is where i seem to get all my information from.
2. www.vvork.com – extremly interesting new media art from around the world.
3. www.iheartmyart.com – i constantly find interesting work on this site.
4. www.todayandtomorrow.net

#11 Behind the Blog: Stilsucht

behindtheblog11

Ziemlich unspektakulär also.

Zukunftspläne?
Kurzfristig: Espresso trinken
Mittelfristig: Ein neues Fahrrad kaufen
Langfristig: Stilsucht mit noch mehr Leuten teilen

Top 5 Blogs:
1. materialicious
2. For Print Only
3. Super2CV
4. Dailytonic
5. Swiss Miss

#10 Behind the Blog: rebel:art

behindtheblog10

1. C-Monster
2. We Make Money Not Art
3. Trendbeheer
4. Pop-Up City
5. Wooster Collective

#9 Behind the Blog: Wesley Yendrys

behindtheblog9

btb9

Please describe your blog in one sentence:
An online storage bin of all the wonderfully diverse and inspirational work I happen to stumble upon throughout my week.

Why are you blogging?
I think it’s a great way for me to expand my palette of art and photography and all that good stuff. Because I generally add my own snippet of insight, it forces me to give a more critical analysis and grasp a better understanding of what I’m looking at, as oppose to just saying ‘oh, that picture is mega dope’ – in a way, it’s for my own benefit. I also like the fact that I have my own space online with the freedom to do what I want. Most importantly, I do it for the readers. I love getting e-mails from people who send me their work or who have nothing but kind words to express – I have yet to receive a negative message from anyone – and I love the community I’ve been able create and get to know over these past few months. Blogging is really a great thing whose power is often underestimated.

How is your daily routine?
After hitting the snooze button about 6 or 7 times, I get up and ready for school – where I attempt to get an education in art and communications. I’ll often write my posts in between classes in the library or in our Media Lab. Once home – whenever that may be – I often nap or eat or check Facebook. After the sun begins to set, I start browsing through the 150 or so RSS feeds to sift and pull anything that has touched, inspired or impacted me in any way – I ALWAYS do this part with a cup of tea by my side. From there, I prep my posts so I can write the textual aspect the following day. I generally end the day at around 2:00am-3:00am with some homework or some videos – Youtube, TV shows, etc. Rinse and repeat.

Your future plans?
I’m definitely considering a domain change because of the focus I’ve been going towards this past year. I’d also like to maybe turn the site into a co-op of some kind so that there’s more of a diversity in terms of work posted and so that there can be more of a regularity when it comes to posts – that’s what I struggle with the most. But who knows? Maybe a quarterly publication highlighting the most popular and interesting posts on the site could be a future project. For now, I’m just trying to focus on sharing a regular flow of good, well written content.

Your top 5 blogs:
Do I really have to make a choice? I love everything in the ‘Sites I Like’ selection on my site, but here’s a small selection from there.

1. Hypebeast
2. ilovethatphoto
3. PICDIT
4. Selectism
5. swissmiss

#8 Behind the Blog: Daydream Lily

behindtheblog8

Ausgabe von “Behind the Blog nachlesen:

daydream_lily1

Please describe your blog in one sentence:
A photography, art & design blog best described as dreamy & romantic with a touch of nostalgia.

Why are you blogging?
I started blogging as a way to be creative again. Years of hitting the books and studying at uni had meant I had little time to be creative. So once I started working I decided to do something about it and started the blog. Its now become a daily journal where I can share artists, photographers and other bits of creativity that are inspiring me, and hopefully inspiring others too.

How is your daily routine?
Get up early, make coffee and read emails. Then I work on a blog post. Then go to work at my day job. I spend a bit of time each day just going through image sharing websites and bookmarking favourites. Evenings, have a nap, read a book or watch some TV, then get on the computer again before going to bed late.

Your future plans?
Grow the blog more and perhaps a fresh new layout. Id love to start a second blog dedicated to photography and showcasing the work of up and coming photographers.

Your top 5 blogs:
I read SO MANY blogs, but 5 of my favourites are:

#6 Behind the Blog: Audrey Hepburn Complex

behindtheblog6-copy

ahc

Please describe your blog in one sentence:
My blog is a humble online picture storage in a constant search for beautiful and inspiring images on the internet.

Why are you blogging?
Audrey Hepburn Complex started off as being a personal image website where I would upload any lovely picture I found online. Despite it’s surprising (and a bit overwhelming) popularity, I try to maintain its modest spirit for it to continue to be a daily inspiration, only now it’s not limited for me but for every follower who appreciates beautiful photography.

How is your daily routine?
I wake up at around 7 a.m, shower and quickly skim over my e-mail, tumblr, flickr, and the nytimes.com during breakfast. I generally go to school in New York until 4 p.m and if I happen to have a gap between classes, I’ll go online and answer e-mails or post on the other blog I work in, noquedanblogs.com. When I get home, I usually dedicate some hours to studying and when I’m done with that, I immerse myself into the internet in search of pretty pictures. The ones that make it are queued to be shown the next day and the rest I post during the same evening. At around 12, I have to unglue myself from my laptop and read something before I go to sleep. If I don’t oblige myself to do this, who knows at what time I’d end up going to bed!

Your future plans?
For the next two years I will be dedicated to finishing my degrees in Political Science and Art History while continuing my work with Audrey Hepburn Complex and Noquedanblogs. However, once i’m done with school, I would like to be work more fully on the internet, creating different types of blogs that suit my interests and that hopefully complement my academic degrees.

Your top 5 blogs:
Although there are a lot that are on my daily list, I never miss out on:
1. Recordis Photography
2. The Cherry Blossom Girl
3. Lolitas.se
4. Garance Doré
5. Daydream Lily
