Koizumi Sekkei Placed A Basketball Court In A House

Although it looks like yet another amazing minimal Japanese residence from the outside, the house built by Koizumi Sekkei has a unique feature – the architects built a basketball court in its entrance hall.

The main intention in this project was to create a relation between the living spaces and the court, situated at the centre of the house. Built at a rare scale, it is hard to say wether the interior space is actually grand or narrow. The basketball court measures one quarter of the size of a regular one, but has a standard three-metre-high hoop and a six-metre high ceiling, which architects claim to be “high enough to play free-throws.” Above it, there is a mounted red-brown timber balustrade that provides a good view on the game, but also leads to the living spaces, such as bedrooms and bathroom. Although the use of the court seems to be determined, it was actually designed in a multi-purpose way. As the architects describe, it has “the ability of becoming a library, and ever more possibilities to be explored by the client over the time.”
