Layered Ceramics Exploring Materiality

Scroll

In the course of his PhD in Ceramics, Jongjin Park explores the relationship between paper and clay, creating stacked ceramic pieces that appear to be made from paper, yet are in fact made from clay.

“My practice explores the remarkable ability of ceramics to deceive the eye.”Brushing the slip onto layers of fine tissue paper before firing it at high temperature (over 1280 degrees centigrade), Park creates strong, durable material that mimics wood, and appears like clay. “My practice explores the remarkable ability of ceramics to deceive the eye. By using tissue paper and clay slip, I can make various materials looks like paper, wood and stratum but it is definitely ceramics at the same time,” he explains. “These effects meet with simple shapes and structures, contrasting with the straight porcelain. My practice asks us to think, ‘what is real?'”
