The Space Between The Imagined And The Real

Characterized by ethereal light and a muted color palette, Dümig’s works explore the inner cartography of the subjects she photographs. To accompany the following selection of photographs, the award-winning photographer shared the following statement with us:

“The space surrounding us influences what’s inside of us. Therefore we may find familiarity in foreign spaces, while familiar places may seem alien.”“Our memories and our imagination form a sort of personal map which we individually use to guide ourselves through the often confusing environment of reality. The common pleasure we find in viewing a physical map, in itself a perfect metaphor for the interaction of imagination and the real, is similar to the pleasure we feel in recognizing part ourselves in another human being.

My pictures are intended to form similar maps of the inner worlds of my subjects. This series can be seen as a reflection on the interplay of the inside and outside. The way we perceive space is influenced by our experiences, our emotional condition and our social background. At the same time however, the space surrounding us influences what’s inside of us. Therefore we may find familiarity in foreign spaces, while familiar places may seem alien at times.”
