A Birch-Clad Restaurant Inspired By The Sami Hut

Scroll

Amidst the snowy peaks of a Swedish ski resort lies the Tusen Ramundberget restaurant, designed by Stockholm-based practice Murman Arkitekter.

“Birch is the only tree that grows up to this altitude where the mountain moor starts.”Clad with birch logs in the style of the traditional huts of the Sami, Sweden’s indigenous people, the restaurant was built in 2009, and intended to blend in with its surroundings. Serving a menu centered around Sami food, the restaurant provides a serene, relaxing haven for skiers, who can relax in a calm Scandinavian interior. Speaking of their choice of birch as the building’s distinctive facade, the architects say, “In this unique and sensitive context we wanted a building in harmony with the nature, the year around and day and night. Birch is the only tree that grows up to this altitude where the mountain moor starts.”
