The Poetics Of Mines And Quarries

Words

Hailing from Melbourne, photographer Dan Hocking focuses on the built environment, still life and unconventional landscape photography.

“There’s a beauty to mines and quarries when you explore the shapes, color and texture of what’s left behind.”Sans’ is an ongoing body of work that captures temporary landscapes and formations in a constant state of transition, shaped by both natural and human intervention. In his project, Dan turns his camera to the earthen materials that are usually used to build and shape the urban environment. However, he leaves the scenes without a particular context in terms of location, scale and human elements in order to simply highlight the aesthetic aspect of the landscapes. “There’s a beauty to mines and quarries when you explore the shapes, color and texture of what’s left behind, which is kind of perverse in a way,” he says.
