A Cabin Perched On A Norwegian Fjord

Scroll

Oslo-based architecture studio Vardehaugen designed a cabin inspired by the shape of a mountain fox curled up to evade the cold wind.

Located on a rocky ridge on a central Norwegian fjord, the pine structure – built as a private residence – is tucked snugly into the cliff face, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding sea, rock and heath. Protection from harsh winds was a priority for the architects, who enlisted expert Anne Brit Børve’s expertise to advise on placement and design. To this end, explain the architects, “the black roof folds in and becomes wall surfaces towards the most exposed directions. The wall surfaces are placed at the angle that will give least access to the wind.”
