A Bathtub Inspired By Boat Building

Scroll

Israeli designer Tal Engel wove together a bathtub from wood veneer, inspired by traditional Asian boat building techniques.

Constructed from a steel frame and strips of pressed woven veneer coated with a polymeric water-resistant material, the bathtub represents the relationship between bathing and sailing – as functions, activities and states of mind. “This concept formulates an almost paradoxical analogy, from which the ‘inside-out’ theory had emerged,” said Engel in a recent interview. “The concept of washing in a bathtub is completely the opposite from the concept of floating in a boat.” Engel’s bathtub was presented at the imm Cologne design fair in January 2016.
