Otherworldly Portraits By Hellen Van Meene

Words

Dutch photographer Hellen Van Meene captures otherworldly portraits of mostly teenage girls since 1996. Van Meene creates a slightly surreal atmosphere within her imagery and besides adolescents, her intimate photographs feature subjects such as dogs as well as still lifes. Over the years, Van Meene has published several books and her work is exhibited in museums around the world, such as the Guggenheim and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, among others.

Speaking of the inspiration behind her imagery, Van Meene says: “Before I finally take a photo, it sometimes takes ten or twenty minutes. First I give my model all the attention she needs, I really look very closely and concentrated at her before I photograph her. This approach is far from just taking out your camera and snaping, snaping, snaping away. What I do is really like a painter working on a painting – looking, making decisions…”
