‘Persona’ the title of Romy Kaa’s series revolves around the theme of identity by using three subjects: herself, her newborn daughter and her mother. The three are seen playing a number of different roles in a variety of staged situations. Although Kaa’s images often border on the surreal, they are also anchored in real-life. Together these images show various stages of life development, and suggest that our former identities are never really lost to us. Costumes, props, settings and composition and the photographic style have a symbolic value. Some images are highly staged and performative, looking like Renaissance paintings, while others have a more spontaneous and natural quality. Kaa works as a freelance photographer in Berlin.
