Objects function as status symbols when their availability is limited. Animals that serve for meat production don’t fall into this category. In fact, they are mass-bred and part of a semi-finished product-specific manufacturing process.
As in other branches of economy the meat industry generates their profits along a value chain. It ends where no further economic processing can be supplied, at the pieces that are just waste. Tables on the other hand are ubiquitous utilities for work, cult, of coming together, of eating and consumption. ‘ORSON, I’m Home’ by Armin Blasbichler is a five-part series of dining sculptures and combine livestock and utility object to demonstrate of the excess of consumption. Representing the five most common types of meat in Western cultures 1 pig, 4 cattle, 1 sheep, 1 deer and 11 chickens have given their lives. Have you ever seen a animal carcasses container from inside? This is nothing for the faint-hearted. But after the third time of sawing off cow legs one lose all inhibitions and becomes sober and objective. If it were not like this, we would have a different relationship to these creatures.

Schwere Kost - mehr Kunst als Design. Als Design Gegenstand kann das doch etwas missverstanden werden, es gibt bestimmt auch verrückte Liebhaber für solche Alltagsgegenstände. Dann ist es aber mit dem Anspruch dahin....
