Gravity Stool

The ‘Gravity Stool’ by Jólan van der Wiel is in dialogue with a natural phenomenon. It obtains its unique shape by a cooperation between magnetic fields and the power of gravity. Starting from the idea that everything is influenced by gravitation due to its strongly shaping effect, van der Wiel manipulated this natural phenomenon by exploiting it’s own power: magnetism. The positioning of the opposing magnetic fields in the machine largely determines the final shape of the Gravity Stool. It is the combination of the magnetmachine with the plastic material which gives them their characteristic freakish and organic shapes that are so typical for nature itself.
