Lilly McElroy wirft sich gerne Männern an den Hals; wortwörtlich. In ihrer Serie ‘I throw myself at men’ springt sie völlig unerwartet Männer an. Dabei sieht es so aus als hätte zumindest sie einen Riesenspaß, während die Männer meist etwas verdutzt aus der Wäsche schauen. Lilly begibt sich mutig in möglicherweise peinliche Situationen und vertauscht bewusst das traditionelle Rollenverständnis zwischen Mann und Frau. Die Fotografien sollen Fragen zu zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen, Sex und Geschlechterrollen aufwerfen und den Wunsch verdeutlichen möglichst schnell Beziehungen aufzubauen, die sowohl intensiv als auch von langer Dauer sind. Außerdem schwingt bei dem Projekt die Möglichkeit des Scheiterns mit, dass der Auserwählte sie eben nicht fängt und die Verbindung eben nicht gelingt.
‘For this project I went to a lot of bars and I literally threw myself at men who I didn’t know. I used my body as a projectile, hurling myself toward strong, vulnerable men who were waiting to catch me. Poised in a perpetual state of social awkwardness and in full possession of the ability to subvert stereotypical gender roles, the photographs pose questions concerning relationships, social connection, sex, gender, and the desire to form relationships quickly that are both intense and long lasting. The project initially started after I placed ads on Craigslist.org looking for men who would meet me blind date style in bars and allow me to throw myself at them. This project comes from a place where the desire to make a positive connection with another person is coupled with the knowledge that a connection might not be possible, that the person might not catch me.’

Die Idee ist ja ganz nett, aber die fotografische Leistung mehr oder minder grausam…

Ich finde sie bewundernswert mutig!
Toll, wie sie alles Mimosenhafte der Frauenrolle wegwirft und sich den Männern an den Hals - ob diese darauf vorbereitet sind oder nicht. Ich denke die mindere fotografische Qualität ist der Situation geschuldet. Ich frage mich sowieso, wie sie in dem Moment noch eine Kamera auslösen kann.
